    Engaging the Congregation in Worship

When you hear the word, liturgy, what comes to mind?  For many they think of formal, rote, stuffy,  "high church" and the like. But that's not really what liturgy means.  The word literally means, "the work of the people".  Another way of saying it is "these are the acts and activities that enable people to engage in worship".  For the past couple of decades, in part because of the seeker-service mindset, we have asked less involvement and participation of people in our services.  But that seems to be changing.  In a recently released CD from Willow Creek, Bill Hybels says that seekers are more open and willing than they used to be to actively engage in the services through singing, prayers and reading of the Bible.   This active engagement provides a greater participation in worship and therefore provides a deeper and fuller opportunity to encounter the Living God.

    Discussion questions:

Do you agree with the last sentence in the paragraph above?  Why or why not?

Are the people in your congregation involved in active participation in worship or is it mostly passive participation?

What are ways to involve people more actively in worship?
